You wouldn't believe how many times I was in/through Picher, OK between 1948 and 1958. It was the weirdest place, winding around through those mountains of lead and zinc and crumbling houses and buildings and funny smell. We lived in Kansas City and always drove the old 69 highway south to Muskogee Oklahoma to visit my Grandma. At least my Dad never let us out of the car to go exploring but we did sit up and take notice of the strange place.

Re: Yep. We have sinkholes here because of mining.

I remember hearing about the town and Linderman. Linderman had said he would not move until everyone else did. His concern was that if he moved, whoever stayed would not have access to medicine.

sad. so very sad. it seems those lead bullets kept on firing.
BTW thank you so much for getting my book. I am a bit nervous because it isn't really a happy book, but then the plight of the Australian Aboriginal people is not a happy story.
