Luckily, my mother was befriended by her Italian neighbor lady when she was a teenager. According to my mom, that woman could cook! So she loved their food, but she would have preferred that I married a Naval officer versus an enlisted one, so she would make comments about his ethnic background.

Yes, her Cuban husband was a big deal then. My mom marrying an Italian didn’t go over well with her family. There was much prejudice then.
