To me, you are absolutely correct. I wouldn't place it in the genre of History films, though historical references and nuances of events are certainly there. The script, the film editing and lighting, the actors' portrayals of the characters, the MUSIC, all make this film an all-around entertainment film which should appeal to many audience genres.
