Like adnohr, I wonder if this would work out for Jan. My mom always said you can’t run from your troubles. A great start and there a nuances of Stepford Wives that I sense.

Hmmm - why do I feel this will not work out as she expects? Maybe because my grandma's scoffing about grass being greener actually took hold in my child-brain?

As for the other issue, no controlling partner for me.

I cannot imagine being married to someone like that. I imagine that her intelligence and scientific background will eventually be a force to deal with once her spouse pushes more extreme boundaries her way.

We are all our own worst critics.

Being comfortable in your own shoes can be hard when you are different. I have to say though that I would not mind changing my hair from wavy to straight and having naturally light tan skin rather than achieving my desired result from damaging rays. Being a part of the majority where everyone looks similar can get rather boring.
