Re: Sassyyass

Yes you are right Sassy I looked it up in the dictionary of course. We probably used in the context of someone who owned a parcel of land. Smallholders were abundant in my area around that time. Thank you for noticing.

Re: Pat

Yes I guess he loved to scrunch the pears. One cannot beat a freshly picked one but usually one has to keep it a day or so. as you know. I don't think the machines leave much on the fields these days.

Re: Sassyyass

Yes it is a bind picking up fallen fruit. Granny Smith grows at the bottom of my garden ,last year there was two apples still  left on it at Christmas.

The life of the yeoman is one that produces a lot of interesting sights and sounds.

We had fruit trees when I was a kid.

Apples, apricot, plums, and a cherry tree. I used to hate to pick up all of the fallen fruit, but it was a part of my chores. I sure did love the apple pies that came from the Granny Smiths though. The apricot preserves was delish too.

C.C.T

In my childhood, we had a plum tree, without a pollinator. They stayed green.

This is such a wonderful picture o life on a farm and growing crops in another time. And the ending was cute too. Thank you.

A man I knew when I was 18 and babysitting his 4-year-old daughter

ran a supermarket & loved the hard green pears, wouldn't even bother with the softer sweeter ones.  Love your description of agriculture - fits exactly what little I know about weather, predicting crops and the incursions of hungry furry critters.

My hubby was a yeoman in the Navy.

I am sure that you have a very different meaning for yeoman, but nevertheless you took me back to the 80s.
