My grandparents were migrant farmers. They had their own farm but traveled to others to earn some extra cash to make it through the winter.

I enjoy reading about the farm life.

I had no clue that the mama would hide her calf. I guess that it makes sense that an animal would be naturally protective of her young.

It is only recently I learned how cows suffer from the loss of their young. I always saw cattle as burgers on the hoof, but now I have seen them play, and have friendships, and suffer emotional losses... and burgers have lost a lot of their appeal.

I loved this.  I was born and bred as a city girl who knew nothing about farms but I married into Missouri farm people.  You just described here Aunt Evva & Unc. Mike's farm, Unc Jakie & Aunt Lucile's farm, Aunt Mildred & Unc. Louis's farm all within miles of each other.  That was quite an experience for me.  My hubby knew all about farming and had every summer worked on one or the other of the farms, but he wanted to be a city business fellow.  Even when Unc. Mike & Aunt Evva left him their farm he wasn't interested....sold it a quickly as he could.

Life was a struggle for Small Holders. You describe it well. I had to get up and wipe my boots.
