How true! That's all I a non-writer know no more about that but this and run-ons are also a problem yet who cares when one is on a roll and can't stop writing and writing and -- oops!

In my experience, it depends on the editor, not the absolute rules we learned in Englush Compositions. It is a base to begin writing. The Oxford Dictionary is too scholarly for aspirations of achieving popularity. I found it true in college courses as well love. Ha.

You're right. The comma can be a conundrum...
I tend to put commas in where they're not really needed and almost always go through a separate edit of any manuscript to eliminate the pesky things.
