Of course many families have secrets. I suppose it was easier to keep them in the old days. Dad was trying to help everyone, he must have been a wonderful man.

I am thinking that Dad knew it would kill his mother to know and she would still blame herself anyway. it was sad for your dad as well and thank you for sharing this story. Yes, every family has secrets, some worse than others. Durell seems not to have been born with a conscience.

Sad but like you said.. that's life, treats people differently....and sometimes it's best for some to not know the truth.

I think every family has such members, such stories. Some are wise enough to do as your family did, for love of someone who would only be devastated by the truth. Yet, it is a good thing that the truth is known.

It happens to many families; secrets that are better off buried.
It is sad that your dad and other family members felt that they had to live with the threat of Durell going to your grandmother if they didn't succumb to his needs.

I think the only satisfaction in this sad story is that at least you
know. I see why your dad wanted to protect his mother from that. He was a good guy. Be safe.

TAPS - I loved your telling of this tale.
It’s sad that he ended up on the wrong side of society. How nice that your dad confided in you. Yes, Durell would be easy to find these days perhaps. Have you Googled his name? Sometimes it is a good thing to not let everyone know your business. Thank you for giving us a great story. Are there more coming?
