respect doesn't mean one has to agree with everyone no matter what, it does however mean allowing people to have their own point of view, unless it is an evil view.

We started going downhill when we stopped respecting the life of a newborn child by throwing them away like trash.

Aretha sang about respect, but apparently nobody was listening.
Respect requires empathy, the capacity to anticipate and understand the feelings of others. It requires consideration which went out the window with cell phones, aggressive drivers and the customer no longer being right.
