Re: Sometime back I bought a dictionary to translate Brit into American

Pat I remember once some Americans were asking for local dialect.

My Dad, said. 'Yes like saying  we be going up strit.' When I came back from the National Service I was amazed how everyone sounded.

A lifeguard who cannot swim....a cruel joke by fate

Your use of higgly piggly reminded me of a chain of stores in southern USA. It's called Piggly Wiggly!

Higgly-piggy. I have not heard that one before. It's neat to find out what old sayings really mean.

Sometime back I bought a dictionary to translate Brit into American

English. I remember some sayings you use, Dear CCT, being said by my grandma Lucy, who most often spoke the King James' English, including 'thee' and 'thou' at times. It seems we're linguistic cousins. Love the lifeguard who can't swim... LOL

I was just thinking myself that the Cockney Eastender is a dying breed now. There is still a lot of Australian sayings that originated from the Cockey migrants and further back to the  Convict days.

There is no better feeling on your feet then sand from a beach.

The sun is a lovely embellishment and the water a beautiful backdrop.
