It is from the snobbish upper class and their ego of one-up-manship, comes a lot of learning. Throughout the Victorian era the lies of the upper-class society was taken as as being stylish for others, especially the middle-class society to be emulated, that their status is seen to be that of the upper class. It stayed until the WWI and II and the ravages that changed the mindset of the people. Likewise, the COVID19 has been a great leveler.
