Sassyass_64 - I think the hot topics then were the weather, health issues the family was dealing with, the weather, progress of the crops, and the stock (farm animals, not the Wall Street version) - and the weather.

Compared to 1859, we at least have many more options.
I can imagine that disease, sanitation, and food quality was hot topics during that time.

My favorite books through my childhood were Laura Ingalls Wilder's LITTLE HOUSE books. She described how her parents homesteaded across the prairies, and you could homestead yourself from her stories.
