We have lots of skunks here, but I have never encountered one at close range. The raccoons are pretty brave though.

I don't think either of them have too many of humans attacking them.  Once when we were back-packing in the Grand Canyon, at night a skunk got in my husband's back pack.  When he realized what it was he threw it as far as he could.  When the skunk then scurried out of the backpack, Bob went to see what damage had been done.  It did not stink it so Bob cleaned it out good and repacked it.  That's the closest I've been to a skunk.
