I agree, cold, and last year it rained. Umbrellas weren't allowed.

I'm not really all that fond of really big crowds. I've been in some but I don't like the mess afterward of getting away from the crowd. Needless to say, I spent New Year's Eve at home.

It takes courage to join a crowd like that plus one wouldn't want to suffer from the Phobia of large crowds.

I have always wanted to visit Times Square during New Year's Eve. We border with New York, so the drive wouldn't be too bad, but I agree that the crowd issue would not work well for me either.
