Your story reminds me of Laura Ingalls Wilder's stories of growing up a pioneer. I just recently got a book about the first version, the more directly autobiographical version she wrote before the Little House Books. One of these moments, I will sit down and read it!

I cannot imagine all that snow. For us in Maryland, anything more than four inches is considered a big snow.

It was tough times, I know it was colder in Winter because the river Thames frozeover and fairs were held on the ice. One had to be pretty brave to run along to the out house at night.
