Once we had 2000 hens and had to dispose of the manure we dug it into trenches it was hard work but it was the only way we could get rid of it or take it 5 miles away. Your Mum had the right combination I would imagine.

We always had a compost pile when I was a kid. Potato peelings
and the occasional food left-overs, weeds, wood and bark chips, etc. Mom must have done the turning of it while we were in school - we ended up with rich loam for the garden. Of course we also had a supply of chicken manure to sweeten the pot.

The compost program sounds like a great idea...You capture the pain felt so well, especially with how the memories turn into such pain.
