Pat - I enjoyed this post.
I have a friend who told me one of the worst things her mother would say about someone, and it spread to everyone in the family, was, "S/he means well." Not in that household. lol.

This is a great read. One of the best family words came from Mother when she was chasing a fly.
Mother was brought up not to say bad words. Tom cat was a bad word. So once when she was trying to swat a really sneaky fly we heard her say "I'll get you , you, you Tom-digger. it is still a family word.

Yep... Much of 'toxic masculinity' is not consciously chosen, it's embedded in boys as they grow. Never occurs to them to consider questioning or rejecting the basic precepts.

We had a lot of those words, as mentioned in your first sentence, in our family. Ribcage has always said that when he was young many of his friends had no idea what he was talking about someties.
