Pat - You were very wise to key this be.

You did the noble thing. I had the opposite happen. I was once contacted by a distant half-relative - is there such a thing? - who was eager to tell me unpleasant gossip about an ancestor of mine. I listened, and made no judgements, verbally or otherwise. Years later, the truth came out to me, unexpectedly, and all of the pieces fit together. The person who had spread the ugliness had been grossly misinformed.

One cannot live in the past. Although at times one feels drawn back to it,as if we might rewrite our own history, but who cares, so why should we.
