I have seen it go the other way too. My ex watched his cousins being spoiled by affluent parents, while he had to work for anything he wanted because his family was well below the poverty line. He gives nothing for nothing. He still swears he wants to be buried with his last dollar in his mouth. Just one of the reasons he's an 'ex'.

I have known many who have risen above the daunting and sad face of adverity. Kudos. And my best to you with the upcoming surgury.

Great post. It took my Mom & Dad a long time to get back up after the big losses caused by the Great Depression. But the hardships made wonderful people of them and they gave of themselves and whatever they had for the rest of their lives.

I remember the annual canned food drive every year at my high school. One teacher brought 2,500 cans during my junior year.
