Re: GoldenMean,
This is very close to my definition, too. I suspect most often, the risk is taken without thought because the need is urgent and compelling. I suspect those who downplay their own heroism do so because for them there was no choice involved, they just acted when action was needed.
I wonder if most of us don't have that quality, or if we simply never get into a situation that demands it.

Re: CCT,
My English son-in-law says this is a very British thing to do: Never let anyone get 'above their station' and that any time anyone succeeds wonderfully, they will always get torn to shreds by the media--and the folks who encourage the media. Susan Boyle is a prime example.

A hero does something brave, in a moment of need..... taking risks that 99.99% of people WOULD NOT take, for the welfare of other people. Whatever stirred them to do that, should be honored and celebrated. It is exceptional and precious, and not to be criticized, but praised. Even if they downplay it themselves, they have a quality that most people do not have.

Hmmmn great thought provoking post. I must say that all my heroes i have forgiven them their faults, even embraced them because YES, we humans are all, everyone of us flawed. Instead of sad or angry it gives me hope for myself that I too can be better than I am.
