that story made me realize just how children take everything in stride.  we forget how the war came to england, the mark it left here in the state was with fathers that never came home or came home wounded, but you were in the thick of it, you had your own gas mask, we had rations, but i can imagine how the raids must have caused hardships with losing loved ones, food, homes gone, we can only imagine.  this post was like a window into time past and of course i loved the flower, here is one for you

Re: Taps

I bet he gets his leg pulled over that Taps. It is nearly as bad as an old man told me when he worked on the farm he ate his dinner going to work and then looked around for a swede for lunch.

Re: PAT

Well it was a long way to the school because the usual one had suffered from a lone bomb. I suppose we were used to walking or running everywhere.

One of my sons (Phil's dad) always had adventures on the way to school that always included sitting in a hidden spot along the bluff above the railroad yards and eating his lunch that was intended for lunchtime at school.  When I started getting notes from his teacher saying he was late everyday, I started getting him off earlier and earlier until I found out she meant "really late', like half of each day.
