Re: Pat
A lot did come over when the IRish potato famine was in evidence. I expect I have hundreds of blood relations in USA Canada and Australia. It is frowned on using peat here but it is the only compost worth using . We buy bales that come from Ireland as it is mixed with some other compost or supposed to be. I don't know what we would use in place of it. We also make our own compost from anything green and soft including newspapers and brown cardboard, but have to be careful not to put diseased plant material in the compost bins.

Slugs and snails Kabu I am going to try a new method
a paper cup in the ground filled with beer I have done this before
and caught hundreds the secret it to let it pong it really excites the critters
and they die happily. One can then just cover it over and it rots away.
Sounds horrible but slime from poisioned molluscs is not pleasant

Re: Ciel
Funny what takes ones fancy, I was going for gardens in large bottles once. The neighbour years ago had a greenhouse full of Succulents, it was like collecting birds eggs.

Seems that succulent plants are a current trend, very strange and interesting plants. I had bought a few whose looks appealed, then went online, found an enthusiasts' group on Facebook. They have many members, tons of knowledge and advice, not always in agreement, but they do seem to have one thing they all agree on: lots of perlite and/or sand in the soil mix so that it drains quickly: Succulents do not, it seems, like moist feet!

My mother used peat compost and raised beautiful gardens,
veggies and flowers. The stuff does wonders for the soil. I don't know if it was a skill she learned as the daughter of a homesteader, or if the skills came across from the old country with her ancestors. The families were Brit (Irish, Scots, English, Welch) and came across the water in the 1860s or 1870s. I seem to remember her borders and beds looking like pictures of English gardens.
