Re:

Well RP I would never eat beef after the mad cow disease.  I think the Angus was originally Scottish and did not succumb. Poem is factually true . The little boy who ate the eye grew up and joined the Navy but was discharged as he was sponsored  by an Uncle

and did not make the grade.

Well Pat there is a lady dying slowly near me I shall take her some because she is so brave walking to town each day. Actually the poem is a true account related by my Mother, they were always hungry although her mother was a seamstress, but she was never well and eight children to care for and being in a village the husband could only get casual farm work he rejoined the Army at the outbreak of war.

I love lamb but would have to be dying of hunger to eat the eyes well of anything. Yuk.  and make strawberry jam and sell it on that stall. it will go in  the twinkiling of an eye.

There's an old expression "in a pig's eye," expressing sarcasm and

disbelief - I hope the strawberries won't go to waste.  I know I'd have to be starving to death to eat a sheep's eye - or any other part of a sheep for that matter. What imagination!

Make that: "...a BIG hit with everyone."

Angus beef sounds great! Smoking sounds horrid - even outside. Strawerries are usually always a bit hit with everyone. White carpet - in the kitchen - out of the realm of sanity! lol. Your poem is a picture of a place and time I've never seen and so interesting. Thank you.
