Regarding female roles in Shakespeare, there has been some study and writing about observing his personal arc of the growth of his understanding of women and female strength, and power. If you want to get an expert's view: Tina Packer is one of the world's great Shakespearian actors/directors/students and wrote Women of Will: Following the Feminine in Shakespeare's Plays.

Re: Aba dear brother

No, not strong positive roles as a rule, but strong personalitie, mesning strong-willed. I did say positive or negative, and it was often negative or tragic. We do seem to recall his fenale characters, I think perhaps because of the way he portrayed them.

Presta sister

I feel Shakespeare, in his tragedies, did not portray his female characters with strong positive roles but rather were strong-headed and negative, except in Othello where Desdemona was such a fine heroine. In his comedy plays, there are innumerous heroines who are invested with brains and not 'brawns'. Emojis can sometimes be treacherous

Aba Brother

I am truly enjoying this write. Shakespeare didn't seem to mind allowing those in his female role(s) to have a somewhat strong personality, did he, whether in a positive or negative light. I wonder, was that common for the time or would he have been considered avant garde? Very interesting and very exciting, as well as worth of moral discourse. Thank you. (Emojis not working.)

Lady Macbeth might as well have been the fourth witch . I suppose it would have been quite believable . Possibly most of these poor old women had dementia and were feared.
