Here's one thing: individual classroom teachers DO NOT design
the curriculum or set the regulations for graduation & college admission. Many of those I know would love to follow the "recipe" in your post, get back to basics and solid academics. I don't believe it's the students who suck; rather it seems they get blamed for the education bureaucracy's failure to encourage learning.

Sad it is that teaching has become a lost art. I hope things do change because the damage is severe.
