I agree with your sense of never-ending war. You mention a 600,000 year war, but there is an ETERNITY WAR of evil against goodness. The war of predators against their victims will never stop. As long as God allows so-called "free will", and does nothing to stop its abuse, then the predators will have a free arena to attack, abuse, and kill anyone they like, like you and me, with no intervention from God. The doctrine of "free will" is therefore harmful, and if that is included in your concept of God, then perhaps you better think again. Why does God "allow" the attacks upon you and me? There are a lot of possible answers, and not all of them are encouraging, in fact they are downright disappointing. But the truth is what it is, and that is what we are all seeking, right?
