In fact, they have been mystified about the origins of the mounds since they were first discovered. One suggested explanation is related to glaciation retreat, another to small mammals, another to mud cracks. They have been investigated in many different ways, but no definitive answer has been found, last I heard.

Wonder if they have gone over it with GPR or Sat. Technology to see what's under there? Interesting, I wonder about the trees though.
