For quite an interesting contrast and an extension of the history, you might take a look at TAIKO. It is the generation before SHOGUN, and is written by a Japanese historian so it has a distinctly different flavor, style-wise. If the cat wasn't on me right now, I would get up and find it and tell you the author.

One of my favorite books on eastern culture is Shogun. I researched it and found out the character portrayed by Chamberlain was thought to be an drunken idiot by the locals. But I don't think Shogun would have been the success it was with him being portrayed that way
