Sadly, we live in a political time where people want to win, not do what is logical or right. For instance, Democrats criticized President Bush's neoconservative policy while conservatives praised it. Then when Obama came in, the sides flipped.
Let's look at a state level. There is no reason that Roy Moore should hold any elected office, but there are still plenty of people in Alabama are going to vote for him because he is on their side.
