Kabu, and the cocked hat
I do believe you're onto something here, dear Kabu... But a cocked hat is one that is perched to one side, perhaps at a rakish angle... Or if you insult a guy at the bar he might knock you into... well, you get the idea.

Mom used to use that expression about getting knocked into a cocked hat, and while I may not have been sure of the specifics, I knew it wasn't something I wanted happening to myself...

A bit of the old stick, I guess the women could knock him into a cocked hat. Please don't ask me what that means it used to be in a paper called The Worlds Fair.
