Me too
I use to love driving, now I stay close to home due to all the accidents, and my age as well. Great post!

Reading RP's comment, I say, 'Welocme to the club!' My dad also taught me how to drive when I was 12, and he taught me well. When I was 14, I was driving long distances, with him beside me, of course. A few days after my 16th birthday I had my license, and later, for a summer job, I also got my truck driver's license, since lapsed I think, LOL. I love driving to this day, and I always will...

My fear of highway driving has been the exact opposite from yours. I always loved the speed and time-saving maneuvering.....that is, until about age 70. That's when I begn to notice that my vision for road signs seemed to be lacking, and my reflexes not as good, and responses slower. So, I don't go far anymore and stick to familiar slow-moving roads.

Yes sadly there is not a lot of pleasure driving as one becomes older. Though it is so handy at times.

Some people just don't enjoy driving, or driving on freeways, and you sound like one of them! One of my daughters doesn't like to drive freeways also, though she will do it. Me, I love driving, as long as my back holds out. I couldn't wait to drive and drove my dad's car at age 12 on private roads. At 15 I was driving long distances on freeways (with my dad sitting shotgun and instructing) to visit cousins. Once during that time, we were on our way home and I had just merged into traffic when a semi-truck was coming at me, going the wrong way on the freeway! I learned quickly how to swerve...
