Last week I found myself in that awkward situation where a complete stranger, a woman who had been helping me in Pier One, mentioned that she had just lost her husband 4 months ago. It is challenging to try to say something appropriate, yet meaningful and not trite. I'm sure you were a comfort to the family.

I have found the few occasions where I had to express my condolences to near-strangers quite uncomfortable. Of course I understand the pain of losing a loved one, but the conventional formulas of expressing that always seem trite. But when one's relationship with the bereaved is not close, it's virtually impossible to go beyond the formalities...
