Re: TAPS,

I have observed this in friends who had great faith in their spiritual beliefs, supported by their religion. One was Mormon, a convert who was unshakeable in her faith. The other was Catholic and though I didn't know her well enough to see how that affected her whole life, it sustained her in times of trouble, for sure. They both lost children--one to brain cancer, at age 3, and the other to a congenital heart defect, aroung age 5.

Re: CCT,

I certainly agree, when survival is the first priority, opera is hardly relevant.

It did occur to me a while back that maybe life doesn't offer much happiness or good fortune: to live with enough, to survive and have some comfort in living is like plain boiled food, and only sometimes we get gravy as a treat. And sweets!  Sometimes, there are sweets!  But expecting them all the time leads to disappointment or tooth decay.

You are right Ciel it always was a lousy deal for most, have you ever heard of a beggar being remembered?  This is the best time for most and the worst for those who are suffering. I don't think many want to listen to an opera if they are homeless and starving.

Sad to say, some never do.  For me, it is faith.  Faith is the victory that overcomes the world.
