I agree with him - state and religion NEED to be separated, and personal liberties are just that, personal, as long as no harm is done to others while one pursues his/her personal liberties. I love tomatoes...but not when they're rotten.

I know it is around 4:00 a.m. and that I haven't been awake long, but toward the ending of your post I'm having trouble knowing where the interview ends and you begin expounding again.  I did get the tomatoes part.

I shall try to remain focused long enough to continue to read the comments here! :) And I love your title for this post! ("Class, were you paying attention?") LOL. I wonder, if there is Evil, then one would think there would also be Good. So is Good both secular and religious? I don't know the answer.

Naut

I look forward to our discussion!  I seem to remember some disturbed fellow here on Blogit,  named Xeno or the like,  who posted arguments against you,  but perhaps you did not respond.  Back in 2004, 5, 6,  I had some very lively debates that were a lot of fun,  except for one asshole who threatened to track me down and put a bullet in my head,  and I got him banned from Blogit.  I don't think we have any sociopaths like him around  here anymore.

Re: Naut: Evil is only religious? I am appalled that you think that...

I love it - but first things first! When I joined Blogit lo these many moons ago, I did so with the expectation of having some serious debates, but that never happened. I stuck around anyway, and certainly not for the peanuts...er, money, LOL, but because I made some friends, and some of those are still here. And some time ago I made a new friend - GM, a man who is actually willing and able to get into some serious debates, and I'm thrilled! I shall definitely respond to his challenge, but not tonight and certainly not tomorrow, since I have a wedding to attend...But I promise you, GM, I shall address this issue; and if others get involved as well - fine by me. All I would ask that they remain focused, as I know GM will be and as I promise to be! So let's leave out podiatrical matters, eh Wiley?  ...

Naut: Evil is only religious? I am appalled that you think that...

I did find the word tomato in there somewhere,  LOL.  But I must challenge your assertion that evil is a concept that is only religious in nature.  I have repeatedly said that a better word for evil is predatory.  Animals have no choice in preying upon each other,  but humans DO have a choice,  and we DO NOT have to be predators upon each other,  in order to survive.

Evil is actually a valid way of life that we can choose,  and many people are choosing it.  It destroys others without moral justification,  but sadly we are free to choose that path,  and it has nothing to do with religion.  Rather,  people who choose to be evil will use religion as their excuse and cover.

Here is a non-religious definition of EVIL for your perusal and comment,  and this is MY definition,  after years of study and thought,   not purlioned from anyone else:

Specifically, evil is the willful harming of others or their property;  the physical or mental abuse of others;  or the withholding of freedom, knowledge, or resources from others;  all for selfish or irrational reasons, without legal or moral justification.

Evil is also and more importantly the category of thoughts (hidden from observation) which causes these choices and actions.  There are degrees of evil, and it is difficult to define these, though our criminal laws attempt to do this with a graduated scale of punishment, which increases with the degree of evil.

....... Your thoughts?

You make a lot of great points, Naut. I have often been puzzled when people call terrorists cowards.
