Perhaps the story has a life of its own and does not wish to be directed what next to do. This is what I read in Six Characters in Search of an Author, by Pirandello.

Point well taken, but I will tend to deflect during conversation at times. A whole 'nother animal...

Even I, though just a male, have been afflicted by that condition occasionally. But I'm working hard at keeping it under control. Which is why today, when I took Bennie for his noonie poop and met Maryanne, the one with the little whippet, and she wanted to talk about the weather, I said, "Yes. it's dreadful! And how is little Chelsea?" That's the name of her doggie, that had a bit of a problem with a paw, which we had talked about before. As far as I was concerned it was far more important to stick to that one issue rather than go on about new topics such as the weather...

Aha so now I know where I went wrong at UNI LOL...it was the BTW about my Boo snake that lost me that mark...actually it was the bibliography. Every tutor had their own concept of how to do it and by following what the previous advice had been given I had it wrong again and dropped a couple of marks. You just keep on writing what is going on in your head. you are much loved.
