Sorry I missed your post yesterday! Thought I had commented. I don't but the pre-packaged stuff after reading about several recalls. I wash eveetyrhing very carefully. The worst for me is berries. At our high-end frocery store I saw a worker picking through each container of strawberries, removing the top ones (which were getting spoiled), putting fresh ones in their place, then closing up the container to sell. No glkves. And this on all the packages. ugh! I may get a veggie wash yet!

Talk about some nasty surprises in one's salad. I thought Ozzy Osbourne was the only human to have eaten bat.

Re: Pat_B

I like hearts of romaine.  They have more food value and the leaves can be washed one at a time.  I cut them in two-inch pieces and they make great little "boats" to fill with chicken salad or quacamole or soft cheeses or anything like that.

I'm beginning tobe phobic about that stuff, too. And even though

I know there's not a lot of nutrition in it, the inner leaves of a head of iceberg lettuce begin to look pretty good...

Good for you.  Better safe than sorry.

I have never bought that packaged stuff, and never will! Here you can get loose everything, and of course I know people can cough and sneeze on it, but I wash it and have never had any problems! Actually you need to be most careful with tomatoes! Some women are pawing a dozen or so before they find one to their liking, so I scrub mine well with a veggie-cleaning solution before slicing them...
