Excellent and insightful observations! The childhood you describe was the norm for hundreds of years! So how do you explain the very recent development? I have thoughts on that, but the go waaaaaaaaay beyond a Blogit comment...

Over the years, there has been a sort of innocence that has been lost...In my old neighborhood, one does not see too many kids out playing even with such great weather. Kids love their video games and phones. On the bright side, there does seem to be a fair amount of walking traffic, so hopefully, they can at least grow into doing activities outdoors.

Things have changed. It's sad.

My mom always made sure we had some change in our pockets so we could call home from the nearest payphone and check in of we were out for more than an hour or two, or if we changed our plans.  We also had to be home before the streetlights turned on at night.  My brothers and I walked everywhere without any worries.  I'm 48 years old and I'm always looking over my shoulder if I'm walking around at dark.

No, you wouldn't be considered neglectful, dear TAPS, because you love your children and would do all you can to keep them safe, while letting them experience life to the fullest. It's true things were different then, or at least we thought so... Nice post.
