Your entry today reminds me of a story I read in my feminist philosophies class. No one knew the gender of the child including classmates and teachers. They all became flustered and frustrated because they weren't sure how to communicate with the child. It was funny. I tried to find it online but couldn't.

"Say what you mean," first rule of writing, right? And of therein lies a modicum of success in communication in general... Perhaps one day we will, as civilized people, transcend all of our "-isms" and be able to speak using words relevant to the conversation without offending others. In the meantime, we can only try.

It is really not easy to throw off everything from one's youth that one never gave a thought could hurt someone else. one's parents spoke in certain ways about people...it has and is a life long fight to throw off prejudices deeply imprinted and I think I am right when I say fairly innocently, by their families. One has to be on their guard especially when using slang.
