This is the basis of scientific method: to test over and over, to actually try to disprove what you think is true. When we challenge our own beliefs with new information, we either increase our understanding, or reaffirm the belief.
Of course, it is sometimes tempting, when putting together a jigsaw puzzle where a piece almost, nearly, sort of, practically fits, but just actually doesn't, to use a hammer to make it fit. But there will always be a bit of light that shows through the gaps.

I would urge that we all "push the button" to test our precious but fragile opinions against Reality, as often as possible, or as often as we can stand it..... those who do it more, will advance faster. Cheers
