It's so poetic in tone - almost reverent. I think we loved the earth
and the natural wonders much more in the early days - when industry and mechanical things were just being set up to make life easier. Or maybe we just knew it better.

Terrible conditions resulting in chest disease etc .You Mum was a gem writing about it first hand. I remember a slag heap dumped from the mines sliding down onto a small school it was very sad.

Well written by your mom - and wonderful that you can share it with family. Her talent obviously lives on in her daughter.

My grandmother's first husband was killed in a mine accident (my grandfather was her second husband). She was left with 5 children under about 7. It's wonderful you were able to post this for your family. There are really no words to describe the hopelessness of a "company town," from what I understand.

How sad the manner of their deaths! I think it is wonderful your mom was able to write about it and then take you to see the site where so much of your family centered.
