Re: shamasehar

Going back here very often the old folks were looked after by the children , of course in those days life expectancy was not like today. That is one of the problems, secondly dementia was just old age, old folk of that period especially in villages just accepted it as long as the victim did not become violent, in that case it was the home where most usually lasted about a fortnight. No one has adapted to these problems here.

Though in India it's the children or the family that still looks after the elder members, care homes have come up in big cities and yes it's expensive.
Nice poem especially the close.

Re: Annicita

Yes A it is a worry for all of them now 30year olds clogging up the bedrooms. They need to save 70 thousand pounds to get a small house. The Baby boomers like their overseas holidays it is like a dog trying to bite its tail.

Re: RPresta

It does seem RP that folk will have to start saving earlier and harder if the wish to have a reasonable retirement. Whisper, I took the inspiration from your poem. loved it.

Re: In this area we don't have care homes that are funded by the local or

One of the grievances here Pat is immigrants. They take a lot of the medical need and

of course they cannot help it, but the hospitals cannot cope especially if there is an epidemic. On the other hand a lot of really good nurses come from other countries. The other real problem is folk are living longer, it results in more and more needing care and the money is not available in the same way it once was.

Re:

They have not done badly here Sam, but it is those who saved a little who are being stripped of everything.

I have not heard about nursing homes in America having issues being profitable...Reading your poem reminds me that change is a constant.

CCT

I wouldn't want to see what happens in care homes...But, as you put it so well - 'Nothing lasts, all passes by'...

Elder care is a growing industry. Now more than ever with the baby boomers reaching retirement age

In this area we don't have care homes that are funded by the local or

state/federal government - used to be, but not for 40 or 50 years now. Nursing homes, places that offer independent or assisted living, must be paid by individuals and cost a good 4 or 5 times what it costs one to live in a house. There are home care options, but if one lives in a facility, they pay full cost until they're penniless, and then the state welfare system picks up the bill. Most bankruptcies in this country happen because people can't pay their medical expenses.
