Very sad story about that horse - it clearly got spooked badly! And 'Animal Rights' types coming out against horses used to draw carriages? Well-meaning but nutty! I have loved horses from childhood on, and even know a little bit about them - and I can assure you there is absolutely nothing wrong with that, as long as they're being handled and treated properly!
And the Panda story is funny...

So sad about the horse and at the end of a lovely time.
Horses were used by humans for thousands of years. I think treated properly and loved they usually live nice lives.
Love the Panda story.

Your post made me wonder if there might be something sharp jabbing the horse in the hitch or reins or something. We had an incident at the Plaza this year of one of the horses spooking and crashing the carriage and the driver getting thrown off of the bridge. No horrible injuries but it made people question continuing the carriage rides.

As for the horse perhaps their were noises to which it was unaccustomed. Or the lights on the float startled the poor thing, especially if the ground was wet or reflective .

Well they usually have a job to get them to mate. Perhaps here is an answer to the problem.
