Yes, it doesn't mean death literally but rather death of an era, way of being, way of thinking etc.

Movies have given the death card the bad rep.  I've seen it in many movies and tv shows as a sign of actaul death.  Thus causing fear and wreaking havoc.

to see a proper interpretation of that card. 

I also see it as a reminder of the difference between what is mortal and what is not. For instance, a relationship has its mortal aspects and its immortal, its karmic aspects.
