There are small critters from the sea one can still buy them in jars in the supermarket.
A mollusc they use to be sold at the fairs on small dishes if one was brave one chewed cockles. Not any now not hygenic ,

A chap once told me about an old lady who made toffee apples for the fairs. She always complained that the wet weather spoiled the sales. That summer it had been dry and hot.
So on seeing the same lady in the autumn he remarked that she could not complain about the weather that year. Sadly she said it was so hot it melted the toffee and it ran off the apples.

some things have changed for the better. Some of the side shows were really cruel when you think back. i remember going to see a group of pygmies and we all stood and stared. One everdently died of home sickness and despair I later learned.
