I don't remeber that, but some games just didn't show the extra digit, requiring you to keep track of the extra thousands, ten thousands, hundred thousand, millions, or ten millions, etc, yourself.

And in the olden days...
getting a hi-score meant the top of the screen shifting over one place to accomodate the extra number! Oh great days...
