It comes down for me that it isn't my fight and I feel so sorry for all of youse down there because to me a total outsider it is such a feeding frenzy for the mass media and the money involved is appalling. The candidates make promises they can't and won't keep because they have to answer to your Congress and high court and such and so all that money that flows so easily could create a real education programme for all or better health care. Can you tell I am sick of it all????

Yes it is a bit wearing Pat. The good news your book is listed on Amazon UK, but not available quite yet.

I miss the days when political discourse was respectful. A lot has changed over the last twenty-some odd years.
Public figures, under which politicians fall under, can sue for libel and slander, but they have to prove actual malice, which is incredibly hard. The person spreading deliberate lies has to pretty much admit that to be so.
I do believe that in order to have a strong democracy, it needs to be hard for public figures to win court cases for libel and slander. Otherwise, people could get sued and lose for honest mistakes, and political discourse would be harmed.
If the New York Times had lost in the Supreme Court against Sullivan, we could have lost a major paper, and the media would have been adversely affected.
Interestingly enough, Donald Trump seems to think that he can change our libel and slander laws so easily to benefit him.
