Nautikos, my dear Nautikos.....

You have indeed crossed into the territory of "bleeding heart liberals",  with your vote for the lions.  I am really concerned for you now.  I must pray for you,  as Jesus prayed on the Cross: "Father,  forgive them,  for they know not what they do."  I think that in this case,  you are truly ignorant of what you write.

In the US,  the list of so-called "endangered species" has been a simple hit-list for enviro-extremists to attack any road project,  any construction project,  any pipeline project that they want to stop.  I have witnessed this in my home town,  and it cost people's lives when the road improvement project was delayed for many years.  It was a very dangerous twisty road called FM 2222 which needed basic improvements, of widening and straightening,  which the local enviro-fools opposed in court.  They cited the needs of the Golden Cheeked Warbler,  a particularly stupid bird whose breeding habits I have written about elsewhere.  They lost the case,  but while they were delaying the improvements,  many people lost their lives on this dangerous road.  I think the number of people killed was about 70 souls. The road finally got improved,  when the enviro-fools got defeated in court,  but  no one had any remembrance or sympathy for the 70 people killed by the enviro-assholes.  Those 70 victims just got lost in the passage of time.

Now, concerning your choice to vote for the lions and against the Maasai:

1. The territory of the Maasai is just a small part of the territory of lions in Africa.

2. So,  the Maasai should be granted absolute supremacy over lions in their limited territory.  The lions could be given supremacy somewhere else.  Just let the Maasai continue with their culture,  as they have for thousands of years.  Have some respect for these amazing people.

3.  If the Maasai have developed a culture of proving their manhood by killing a lion who has attacked the livestock of the Maasai,  then LIONS BEWARE,  DON"T MESS WITH THE MAASAI.  The lions should learn to go elsewhere for their food.

Now,  just imagine yourself with nothing but a spear in your hand,  facing an angry lion who has killed your livestock.  Killing this lion will mean more food for your family.  It has nothing to do with proving your manhood,  but everything to do with providing for your family.  Sadly for you,  Nautikos,  I don't think you would be able to kill the lion,  and you would become lion food.  Cheers

Fascinating! But at the risk of being called a 'bleeding heart liberal', LOL, I root for the lions! The reason is very simple - they're an endangered species! The Masai (who have smart phones (!) and watches can surely find less lethal ways to protect their herds! And the men ought to find a better way to prove their manhood...

Thanks for reading,  and choosing for the people.  If anyone has earned the right to kill lions,  it is the Maasai.

Welcome to the non-pacifist club,  LOL.  In supporting the people against the lions,  you are staying true to your ideology,  as I am.

Right, Kabu.....

You are wise in your assessment.  Most likely,  both lions and Maasai will survive,  but vastly diminished and forced to change their ways of life.  It is very sad.....

What an interesting post.  I would have to choose the people.  It is not quite the same as in Alaska where people kill wolves with guns from helicopters, for who knows what reason.

I myself favor the people in this instance. I am not a pacifist, though, so I am not betraying any ideology in my case.

very very difficult to watch. i think both lions and the Maasai herdsmen are doomed to different lives. if they are not to become extinct.
