Re: TAPS

Thank you, TAPS. Yes, I would believe it! It's horrible! And who is there to advocate for those poor people?

Re: C_C_T

You are correct. I think this has to do less with monetary status than with psychological and sociological maniupulation; weak vs. strong. No matter the cause, it was not a good thing.

Re: Katray2

Thank you, Katray2. Hearing it as a child, I must say, I found it nearly impossible to comprehend on several levels! My g-uncle and my grandfather witnessed it as children, I believe.

Re: Riversidepoet

Thank you. I agree with what you say. Parents who treat their children negatively in the manner you mention are demonstrating a form of verbal abuse.

Re: shobana

I agree. And sad it is, indeed.

...and wonderful singing also.
Would you believe that there were old people who were bullies in the nursing center where my mom & dad & sister were at various times.  I guess once a bully, always a bully.

It is all so true RP. Bullies have always existed. To persecute poor people is really despicable, especially if they are hard working and honest. Perhaps most of us have known times much harder than they are now, sadly it is not so for all. Your forebears left such good impressions. Thank you for this.

A heartbreaking story with a much needed lesson..

Universal and timeless; such good work, RPresta, I am enlightened and very impressed!

a great story with a lot to be learned, I thought while reading this of parents who talk down and mean to their children , never telling them they are good and encouraging them, if one is told enough that they are worthless , they will begin to believe it, the old saying should be used by all, if you can't say something good then say nothing at all, thanks for sharing this, everyone should feel wanted and loved, may we all show this to others today and forevermore.

Oh, yes, we can overcome those bullies.

That was a good lesson to learn and I loved how over the generations it was remembered and taught. Yes, bullying is a malfunction of the state of mind. Only crude, unintelligible people try to impart that part of them to others seemingly to think that they can somehow rule over those who have no time for it. But sometimes, some are so taken in and traumatised that they fall victims to the bullying and that's sad.

Nautikos

Thank you, glad you enjoyed it. Hah! Corleone! Of course he would be mysterious... And, some people are just plain hard to talk to, regardless of country of origin! I wouldn't doubt that if this mystery man's English had been as clear as the King's English, or your Italian as fluent as Pavarotti's, he might have been (intentionally) difficult to understand, as to his meanings of wording. Difficult indeed, are some folk. I had a relative or two who pretended not to understand much English. Others, who knew only as much as they needed to know, and some, who spoke more correctly and fluently than most people who have English as their mother language.

RP

Great story - well told, and the background to it as well. All this reminded me -  I knew an interesting and somewhat mysterious man from Corleone in Sicily. Our conversations were always quite laborious - I had a very hard time understanding his English and his Italian...
