well Pat I rarely dry my clothes in the machine in winter I hang them on top of the stairs or sling them over an electrical heating rack. In summer they go outside, I remember my Mother gleefully looking at a big roller which Dad bought second hand it squeezed the clothes exceedingly well as there was no central heating and a job to dry clothes in winter.

Things sure have changed! In this house we no longer even own an ironing board, and I'd be very surprised if there's still one of those steam irons around - and if it is, I wouldn't know where, LOL...

Yes, Ma'am our moms worked so hard with their hands (elbow grease)
And i am too tired to wash my cup, or plate. They did the laundry in tubs - and in places they still go to a public water hole to do dishes & alundry. God Bless all moms, especially thse who have fewer machines & sons (LOL!) to assist a bit.

Wiley's mother with 8 children would be still hanging clothes outside when the children got home from school and ironing well into the night...after she stopped to get supper for everyone of course. put the little ones to bed etc. How she managed I have no idea.

A very interesting post. Brought back lots of memories. I also am very happy that I did not have to wash clothes for our family of six, like my mother had to do for a family of nine.
