We have come a long way. Now we are finding more and more people who have been in prison for years for something they didn't do.

That is an interesting Question. Perhaps he just didn't want to go on after the deed. Maybe he didn't want to spend the rest of his life in somewhere like Alaska, or the desert.
of course he could have signed onto a whaling ship going to Australia and started a new life there.
